A filmmaker revisits the ruins of an early mental health asylum to reconcile with her estranged brother’s past, shifting memory, and confronting myths about mental health, as well as her own misconceptions.
In continuation with our genealogy film series, Isabelle Tavares explores the Asylum Lake Reserve in Kalamazoo Michigan with her brother Pablo. Himself a former patient of psychiatric institutions, Pablo co-writes this experimental feature film. The pair shares their childhood memories of the legends of Colony Farms, an institution known for its alternative methods for psychiatric care.
