Debut feature film.
Director Nayibe Tavares-Abel dives into her family history to create a map of the Dominican Republic’s 60-year struggle to consolidate democracy. After working as a poll-watcher in the sabotaged 2020 elections, Tavares-Abel researches her paternal grandfather’s role as chief of the Electoral Commission during the 1990 political crisis that consolidated the power of authoritarian president Joaquin Balaguer after an alleged electoral fraud. A transgenerational portrait of the Dominican Republic, the film reminds viewers of the fragility of democracy as a political system and presents a new generation willing to overcome their elder’s shortcomings.
